This class is designed to accompany the study of African American Art through US History in the 20th century.
Romare Bearden,
Show Time, 1974, collage
Objective:
The rich history of African-Americans during the Harlem Renaissance is brought to life through the study of the artists Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence. Students create unique collage portraits, using the techniques of these artists.
Ages: 5th - 12th grade
The following topics are presented:
•The Harlem Renaissance
•The Great Migration
•The lives of Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden
•The technique and history of collage
Art Activity:
A demonstration on collage techniques, including color field theory is presented, then students are given magazines with appropriate pictures for making self-portraits. They cut and tear pieces from the magazines, arrange them and then glue the collages.
